CNN reports the incident occurred in Inglewood, Calif., the rapper's hometown. M-Bone, real name Montae Talbert, was reportedly sitting in a parked car when an unknown vehicle pulled up alongside and shot
Talbert left behind a promising career. Cali Swag District's single, "Teach Me How to Dougie," hit number 28 on Billboard's charts in 2010. Fellow group member Smoove took to Twitter Monday to lament his friend's death, and Cali Swag's representative, Greg Miller, called the late rapper an "inspiration" to those around him.
With his death on Sunday, Talbert joins a sad list of rappers who died young by violent means. Some of rap's brightest stars over the past two decades, like Notorious B.I.G., have been victims of drive-by shootings. Biggie, real name Christopher Wallace, was gunned down in March of 1997 in Los Angeles. No one has ever been charged with the crime, and frustration over what many have alleged was police incompetence in not bringing anyone to justice led the FBI to release some of its files on the investigation earlier this year in an effort to ease the criticism.
