RAPPER JA RULE PLEADS GUILTY TO $3 MILLION TAX EVASION

Wednesday, March 23, 2011 , Posted by HTMZ.COM at 8:28 AM

Tuesday, rapper Ja Rule, born Jeffrey Atkins, pleaded guilty to tax evasion after he failed to pay taxes on more than $3 million in income he earned from 2004 to 2006. He now faces up to three years in prison.

Atkins earned the money while residing with his wife and children in the upscale community of Saddle River in New Jersey. He earned around $1.59 million in 2005 and $490,000 in 2008. The Associated Press reported the government estimated that the rapper owes taxes totaling more than $1.1 million.

The rapper appeared in US District Court today in Newark where he was questioned by a U.S. Magistrate and Assistant U.S. Attorney. It’s reported that if plea conditions are met, two counts of unpaid taxes will be dropped. The sentencing is scheduled for June 13.

Unfortunately for Atkins, five days before he’s set to appear in court, he’s scheduled to report to prison on an unrelated weapons charge. After pleading guilty in December, he was sentenced to two years in prison for attempted criminal possession of a weapon.

Chances are, Atkins’ attorney, Stacy Richman, will file to have him serve time for the tax evasion and the weapon charge at the same time. She said:

“He’s been working on addressing these issues for some time, and he’s taking full responsibility,”

Wow. Looks like things are going really well for you, Ja Rule.
