No, Facebook Isn’t Shutting Down. It Was a Tabloid Hoax.

Of all the media comments Facebook has had to give over the past year, this is probably the most ridiculous: The social-networking giant assures us all that it is not shutting down on March 15, as reported by the Weekly World News.

“We didn’t get the memo about shutting down, so we’ll keep working away like always,” the company said on its Facebook wall and on Twitter.

Over the weekend, the Weekly World News — the tabloid famous for “Bat Boy” — wrote that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was going to shut down the site in March. The tabloid “quotes” Mr. Zuckerberg as saying: “The stress of managing this company has ruined my life.”

Weekly World News, for those who are not familiar with it, is basically like the Onion, only not quite as funny. Some choice headlines also currently on the site: “U.S. Trades Carrot Top for Canadian Pennies,” “Mike Tyson Pigeon Fetish” and “Republicans to Read Bible on House Floor.”

The Facebook news seemed to fool some of the more than 10,000 commenters on the article, although it’s tough to tell whether they actually believed the news or were being tongue-in-cheek.

Comments seemed to be divided into two camps: Those saying things like “YOU CAN’T END FACEBOOK !!!” and those who argue: “What are you STUPID? It’s obviously fake news you idiots.” (twsj)
